Egyptian doctor filmed dancing with newborn sparks outrage, faces professional ethics probe

Send Push
A disturbing video of an Egyptian doctor dancing with a newborn baby has triggered widespread anger across Egypt, leading to formal investigations and possible disciplinary action. The footage, which spread rapidly on social media, has not only drawn public criticism but also prompted swift intervention by the country’s medical authorities.

The video that sparked public outrage
A video widely circulated on Egyptian social media platforms shows a young doctor dancing on a woman’s delivery bed while handling a newborn baby in a manner that has been described as careless and unethical.

In the clip, the doctor performs the viral "PUBG" dance while holding the baby by the neck. At one point, he places the newborn between his feet before handing the infant over to someone believed to be the child’s father. The recording appears to have been filmed inside a medical facility, possibly shortly after childbirth.

Viewers condemned the act as unprofessional and insensitive, especially given the context and the newborn’s vulnerability. Critics on social media accused the doctor of showing blatant disregard for the dignity of the newborn and the emotions of the family. Many also voiced concern over the broader implications such behavior could have on the reputation of Egypt’s medical profession.

Immediate response from the doctors syndicate
In response to the backlash, the Egyptian Doctors Syndicate quickly announced that it had summoned the doctor in the video for questioning. The case has been referred to the Professional Ethics Committee, which will assess the incident in accordance with the Syndicate’s ethical guidelines.

In an official statement, the Syndicate emphasized its complete rejection of any behavior that violates the sanctity and ethical foundations of the medical profession. It noted that actions such as those seen in the video contradict core professional and human values, especially those related to respecting patient privacy and upholding dignity within medical settings.

The Syndicate assured the public that it would not hesitate to impose deterrent disciplinary measures on any member found guilty of conduct that discredits the profession or fails to meet its ethical responsibilities. It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the honor of the medical profession and maintaining public trust in healthcare practitioners.

Legal and disciplinary pathways explained
Dr. Ibrahim Al-Zayat, a member of the Egyptian Doctors Syndicate Council, spoke to Al Arabiya.net and Al Hadath.net about the formal procedures being followed in the case. He explained that the Syndicate has a clear code of professional ethics, and when a complaint is filed, doctors are subject to a two-tier legal review process.

Stage One: Complaints Committee

  • Composed of members from the Syndicate Council and a representative from the Administrative Prosecution Office.
  • Investigates the case to determine whether the conduct violates professional ethics.
  • If wrongdoing is established, the case is escalated to the next level.
Stage Two: Court of First Instance

  • Consists of two members from the Syndicate Council and a judge from the State Council.
  • This body is empowered to issue disciplinary actions that range in severity depending on the findings.
According to Dr. Al-Zayat, penalties may include:

  • A reprimand or formal warning
  • Suspension from medical practice for six months, one year, or two years
  • Permanent removal from the Syndicate’s records, effectively revoking the doctor’s license to practice
Dr. Al-Zayat also clarified that no punitive action will be taken until the investigations are concluded. The Syndicate is awaiting the outcome of the inquiry before deciding on appropriate sanctions, if any.

Broader concerns over professional conduct
While this case has garnered particular attention due to its viral nature, it has also raised broader concerns regarding medical conduct and ethics in Egypt. Public sentiment, especially online, has called for stricter oversight and more robust enforcement of professional standards to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The outrage expressed by many Egyptians underscores a growing expectation for accountability within the healthcare sector—particularly when it comes to patient rights, dignity, and professional boundaries.
