Sony made some big announcements during its recent State of Play event, including details about the next wave of games joining PS Plus in the coming weeks.

This includes a huge new game for PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers, as The Last of Us Part 2 joins the Game Catalog.

To commemorate 'The Last of Us Day' (the date the outbreak reached critical mass in the original game), The Last of Us Part 2 will be available to Extra subscribers on the afternoon of September 26.

PS4 owners with an Extra account can play the original release, while PS5 users will be able to access the superior Remastered version.

The PS5 version contains a host of improvements and extras, including enhanced visuals that output at 4K in Fidelity Mode.

That's on top of speedier loading times, as well as DualSense controller support for a more immersive experience.

Elsewhere, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered contains a selection of 'Lost Levels', which didn't make it into the original game. There's also a developer's commentary, as well as a separate Guitar Freeplay mode.

Finally, users can jump into the superb No Return roguelike survival mode, which tasks players with surviving for as long as possible across a series of random encounters.

The addition of The Last of Us Part 2 goes some way towards closing the gap on Xbox Game Pass, which added Hollow Knight Silksong earlier this month.

In addition to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PS Plus Extra, Sony also revealed the Essentials line-up for October 7.

It's another stellar PlayStation Plus line-up that's headlined by former game of the year winner Alan Wake 2.

Alan Wake 2 will be joined by Cocoon, which was created by Limbo and Inside designer Jeppe Carlsen. Finally, Goat Simulator 3 will be added to PS Plus Essentials on October 7.

The trio of games will replace the existing line-up of Psychonauts 2, Stardew Valley and Viewfinder.
