Kochi: This is a ‘missing person’ complaint alright, but with a difference.
The man in question happens to be Union Minister and Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi, the first and only BJP MP from Kerala.
Kerala Students Union (KSU) district president Gokul Guruvayur has filed a police complaint with Thrissur East police, alleging that the Union minister has been “missing” from his constituency.
The complaint claims that actor-politician Gopi has not been seen in the area since the arrest of Malayali nuns in Chhattisgarh — a case he had described as fabricated.
“In the last two months, the MP, who is also a Union Minister, has been completely missing from any events in the constituency,” Guruvayur said in his complaint. “Even the mayor and the Revenue minister are not able to get in touch with him.”
Thrissur Mayor and minister K Rajan reportedly tried to contact Gopi several times to inaugurate a Central government project in the city, but he was unavailable.
“Nobody in the constituency is able to meet him. When his office is contacted, none of his staff are able to confirm where he is or when he will return,” Guruvayur claimed, justifying his complaint.
“After the Chhattisgarh issue, in which two nuns were arrested on fabricated charges of human trafficking, we have not seen him in this constituency at all,” he said.
Guruvayur further claimed that the Thrissur MP “used to visit Christian homes during Christmas to distribute cakes”.
He alleged that the public and political parties, including BJP workers, have raised concerns over the minister’s absence. KSU, the students wing of Congress party, has announced plans to launch a campaign against him.
Sent via email, the complaint was termed as a symbolic protest.
Guruvayur said Gopi has failed to respond to serious issues like the Chhattisgarh nuns’ arrest and allegations of voter list manipulation.
The students union has demanded a through probe into the minister’s absence and warned of intensified protests until he clarifies his position.
