Ruben Amorim response to Gianluigi Donnarumma to Man Utd transfer question speaks volumes

Send Push

Ruben Amorim could only let out a laugh when asked about the prospect of Manchester United signing Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer. The Italian goalkeeper's time at Paris Saint-Germain appears close to an end with just one year remaining on his contract at the Parc des Princes.

Luis Enrique has already seen a new goalkeeper arrive in the French capital. PSG agreed a deal for Lille shotstopper Lucas Chevalier, who joins on a five-year contract after the Champions League winners decided to pay up £34.7m, with the potential for a further £13m in add-ons.

The Parisian side are anticipating a bid for former AC Milan shotstopper Donnarumma as soon as this summer. It's understood they'll take a fee in the region of £26m - a knockdown price - for a player reckoned by some to be the world's best. And United are among those they see as a contender.

The Red Devils have long been linked with signing a new goalkeeper. Back-up option Altay Bayindir has endured an uncertain future, with the club said to want greater competition for Andre Onana. Onana has not always asserted a confident presence at the Theatre of Dreams and has previously seen uncertainty over his own position, with figures such as Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez and Donnarumma linked to Old Trafford.

On Saturday, Amorim had the question put to him about the prospect of signing Donnarumma. The Portuguese was stopped outisde of the stadium, as Manchester United played their final friendly against Fiorentina, and was taken to task by a supporter of the club.

Amorim could only first respond with "Sorry?" before the question was put to him a second time. The ex-Sporting Lisbon boss could only let out a wry laugh as he continued to sign autographs without offering a clear-cut answer.

Perhaps not a question for him... Or perhaps not a priority with United's spending already exceeding £200million and a midfielder next on the agenda.

Amorim has already added Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon to his squad this summer. United's attention may now be on selling players.

Marcus Rashford secured an exit to Barcelona this summer but fellow unwanted stars Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho are still without a new side. The latter is said to have agreed personal terms with Chelsea.

There will also be attention on the United net for the start of the season. Bayindir played in goal against Fiorentina with Onana out injured. The Cameroon international has not featured during pre-season but is in contention to play against Arsenal.
