Paedophile agrees to undergo physical castration in US first plea deal

A serial child abuser has consented to undergo castration as part of a startling plea bargain after being apprehended for attempting to sexually assault a seven year old girl.

Thomas Allen McCartney, 37, who is deemed a "Tier Three" offender and is considered one of Louisiana's most heinous child predators, has agreed to both physical and chemical castration in exchange for a reduced prison sentence.

Despite the deal, he will still serve 40 years in prison, as reported by local station Fox 12. The news comes as a doctor was caught with 'paedophile manual' and 90,000 sickening images.

Louisiana stands as the first and only US state to permit surgical castration as a penalty for sexual offences.

The law was enacted at the start of August, and McCartney's case is expected to be among the initial instances of its court application.

Since 2008, the southern state has sanctioned chemical castration as a punishment for specific sexual crimes.

In extreme cases of sexual abuse, Louisiana judges can propose the procedure, with those declining it facing an additional three to five years' imprisonment.

The drastic option was offered to McCartney, a resident of Leesville, following an incident in February 2023 where a mother caught him in the act of sexually abusing her daughter, as KPLC-TV reported.

Upon being discovered, he brandished a firearm to flee but was later arrested in Houston, Texas, and extradited back to face his charges, reports the Express.

On Tuesday, in Vernon Parish, he entered a guilty plea to the charge of attempted first-degree rape of a child under 13 years old.

"This is a horrific crime that never should have happened," Vernon Parish District Attorney Terry Lambright told the press.

"Thomas McCartney is a predator that needs to be locked away from others in our community."

The serial offender has previously been found guilty of attempted aggravated rape in 2011.

In the year prior, he was detained on two counts of aggravated rape involving a 12 year old.

Back in 2006, he was apprehended on one count of felony carnal knowledge of another girl.
