How dangerous is nitrogen gas smoke for health?

To add to the joy of weddings, smoke of nitrogen gas is blown these days so that the entry of the bride and groom can be shown in a grand manner. Its purpose is to show the bride and groom coming out from among the clouds. However, a similar attempt at a wedding ceremony in Rajgarh district of Madhya Pradesh took the life of a seven-year-old girl. Let us tell you how dangerous this gas is for human health?

How did this accident happen?

There was a wedding on May 6 in Khujner town of Rajgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. In this, a grand entry of the bride and groom was planned before the Varmala ritual, for which the event manager used liquid nitrogen. Actually, when liquid nitrogen comes in contact with air, a lot of white smoke starts coming out. This creates an atmosphere like fog smoke, which looks very spectacular, but is very dangerous for health. In this wedding, liquid nitrogen was kept in a vessel for the entry of the bride and groom, in which seven-year-old girl Vahini fell and got badly burnt.

How did liquid nitrogen cause harm?

Let us tell you that the cold level of liquid nitrogen is up to -195.8°C, due to which the human body becomes a victim of frostbite (melting of the body due to extreme cold) or cryogenic burn. The girl's body got burnt up to 80 percent after falling into the vessel of liquid nitrogen. She was immediately admitted to a hospital in Indore, where she struggled for life for five days and breathed her last on the night of May 10. This accident has scared the people of the town badly. The girl's father said that there were no arrangements for the care of the vessel in which the liquid nitrogen was kept. No one even knew how dangerous the liquid nitrogen that was being used to make the event spectacular was. Now people have demanded a ban on such dangerous events. Now the family has decided to donate the girl's eyes.

Why is nitrogen gas used?

Nitrogen is a chemical element with the symbol N and atomic number 7. It makes up about 78 percent of the Earth's atmosphere and exists as a gas at normal temperatures. Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that is not usually involved in chemical reactions. However, when it is cooled in the form of liquid nitrogen, it produces cold fog i.e. white smoke. In fact, it is used to create smoke clouds in wedding ceremonies.

How dangerous is nitrogen gas?

Nitrogen gas is not poisonous, but it can prove to be very dangerous if negligence is shown in its use and management. The temperature of liquid nitrogen is -195.8°C. If it comes in contact with the skin, it can cause frostbite or cryogenic burns. In the Rajgarh accident, the girl's skin could not tolerate the cold of nitrogen and her body was burnt up to 80 percent. Nitrogen gas is heavier than air. If it spreads in a closed space, it can eliminate oxygen. This can cause breathing problems, unconsciousness and even death. The use of this gas in crowded events like weddings increases the risk significantly. If the smoke of liquid nitrogen enters the lungs through breathing, it can freeze the cells of the lungs. There is also a risk of a lot of difficulty in breathing. If liquid nitrogen is stored or heated incorrectly, it rapidly turns into gas, which can also cause an explosion.
