Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Assembly has approved a significant increase in the salaries and allowances of MLAs, MLCs, and ministers. Following the hike, legislators will receive an additional ₹67,750 per month, while ministers will see a rise of ₹77,750 per month. The revision was passed unanimously on the final day of the Monsoon Session after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna tabled the UP State Legislature Members and Ministers Amenities (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
The last revision in salaries and allowances was implemented in August 2016. Acting on recommendations from a committee formed at the request of all parties, the new provisions will take effect from April 1, 2025, and will be revised every five years based on the cost inflation index as per Section 48 of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The basic monthly salary for ministers has been increased from ₹40,000 to ₹50,000, and for MLAs from ₹25,000 to ₹35,000.
Former members of the Legislative Council who complete six years of service will now receive an additional ₹2,000 per month in pension, increasing annually by ₹2,000 thereafter. Family pensions have been raised from ₹25,000 to ₹30,000. The annual railway coupon value for former legislators has been increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh, with ₹50,000 for rail or air travel and 1 lakh for petrol or diesel for personal vehicles. Unused amounts can be adjusted later. The changes are expected to place an annual burden of ₹105.63 crore on the state exchequer.
