US Labor Department sets up new office to oversee work visas

The US Department of Labor (DOL) has set up a temporary Office of Immigration Policy to oversee and coordinate employment-based visa programs, the agency confirmed. The new unit will be led by Brian Pasternak, who currently heads the Office of Foreign Labor Certification.

The office will report directly to Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer and will function as the DOL’s central point of coordination for immigration-related matters. It aims to streamline access to legal work visas by developing customer-focused policies and aligning immigration efforts with other federal agencies.

A memo dated June 23 from Secretary Chavez-DeRemer outlined the new office’s role in advancing immigration policy under existing labor laws. “Employers will increasingly turn to legal pathways – most notably permanent and temporary employment visas under the Secretary’s authority where statutory and regulatory deadlines exist – as a vital option to obtain a timely, qualified, and stable workforce that can help their businesses grow and prosper,” she wrote.

The Department stated that the creation of the Office of Immigration Policy is intended to improve efficiency, ensure strategic oversight of immigration-related funding, and enhance communication with Congress and the public. The unit will also coordinate with the Departments of Homeland Security, State, and Agriculture on immigration policies.

The DOL emphasized that this is a temporary organizational change. The authority of the Employment and Training Administration (ETA), Wage and Hour Division (WHD), and Bureau of International Labor Affairs remains unchanged. The new office will work in coordination with these agencies without altering existing Secretarial Orders.

The memo clarified that the office is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice.
