Director Michael Chaves, who returns to helm the final installment titled The Conjuring: Last Rites, has confirmed that the next film will be the concluding chapter in the popular horror series. In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, director Michael Chaves shared that the decision to end the franchise came from a collective understanding among the team that now is the right time. “You want to stop at the peak,” he said, adding that there was a mutual feeling among producers and creators that The Conjuring series should bow out while it’s still at its creative and commercial high. According SFX reports, Chaves didn’t want to be the one to drag the franchise down with unnecessary sequels, and saw this as a rare chance to make a meaningful and timely conclusion.

Chaves, who previously directed The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, also said that he was determined to bring back the feel of the original 2013 film. He aims for Last Rites to return to that “back-to-basics haunted house” atmosphere that made the first movie such a standout in the genre. The director also shared that there’s extra pressure this time around, to deliver a perfect farewell to beloved characters Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed once again by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.

For the unversed, The Conjuring: Last Rites, starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, is slated to hit the theatres worldwide on September 5, this year. The duo are going to reprise their roles as Lorraine and Ed Warren.
