Former international cricketers Varun Aaron and Aaron Finch praised Washington Sundar's performance during the third T20I of the ongoing series between Australia and India. Sundar remained unbeaten on 49 off just 23 balls as India chased 187 in 18.3 overs to level the series.
Aaron pointed out Sundar's past success in dealing with short-pitched deliveries. He also highlighted how Sundar's first maximum on just the second ball of his innings laid the ideal foundation for building on the momentum.
“Washington has demonstrated his effectiveness with the bat, especially against short-pitched deliveries, as we saw in the previous IPL. His first five boundaries off the fast bowlers were all through short balls, showing how well he thrives on them. Australia likely underestimated his capability to play the short ball, and his early six off Nathan Ellis set the tone perfectly. Though he didn’t bowl in this match, his contribution with the bat was crucial," stated Aaron on JioHotstar's Cricket Live.
Meanwhile, Finch felt Sundar's presence took the pressure off Tilak Varma. He also pointed out that Sundar looked comfortable playing on both sides of the off side and on side.
"Washington was outstanding and delivered exactly what India needed at that moment. His arrival at the crease took the pressure off the set batter Tilak Varma, which is vital in T20 cricket. He played confidently on both sides of the wicket and responded well to short-pitched deliveries. It was an excellent innings from a top performer," added Finch.
India chased the target with nine balls to spare courtesy of Sundar's knock and crucial contributions from the top-order. Arshdeep Singh (3/35 in 4 overs) secured the Player of the Match award for his spell. Varun Chakravarthy and Shivam Dube picked up two and one wicket, respectively.
The fourth and fifth matches are scheduled to be played in Carrara and Brisbane on November 6 and November 8, respectively. The first match was deemed a 'no-result' due to rain while the second one was won by the hosts by four wickets.
