Arguably the standout fixture in the EFL Cup fourth round takes place at St James’ Park on Wednesday night, as Newcastle United host Tottenham Hotspur as the holders welcome Thomas Frank's side who have been solidly consistent this season.
The Magpies come into this tie on the back of a 2-1 Premier League win over Fulham, while Spurs impressed with a 3-0 victory against Everton in their most recent outing. Newcastle have found form in recent weeks, winning four of their last five matches across all competitions, a run that has seen them climb to 12th in the Premier League with 12 points from nine games. Defensively, Eddie Howe’s side have been solid, conceding just eight goals in those nine matches, though they have struggled for goals themselves, finding the net only nine times.
In the previous round of the EFL Cup, Newcastle eased past Bradford City with a 4-1 win, and they have also claimed back-to-back Champions League victories over Union SG and Benfica. The Magpies are the reigning League Cup champions, having lifted the trophy last season with a memorable 2-1 win over Liverpool in the final.
Recent history favours Newcastle, who have won their last three encounters with Tottenham, including a 2-1 victory at St James’ Park in September 2024. Spurs, meanwhile, have suffered defeat in five of their last six meetings with the Magpies and have not won at St James’ Park since October 2021. The last time these two sides met in the EFL Cup was in the quarter-finals in December 2014, when Tottenham cruised to a 4-0 victory. Spurs have not lost to Newcastle in this competition since 1976.
Thomas Frank’s Tottenham side currently sit third in the Premier League table, having collected 17 points from their opening nine fixtures. However, consistency has been an issue, with just two wins in their last six matches. In the EFL Cup, Spurs advanced with a 3-0 triumph over Doncaster Rovers in the previous round. Tottenham have won the League Cup four times in their history, with their most recent success coming in 2008.
